The Phil-Fin

Thursday, March 01, 2012

When Phil Edwards was designing his fin template back in the very early sixties, he was obviously watching sailboats cruising by his place at Capistrano. He is a catamaran nut, having designed the incredible Hobiecat with Hobie Alter. Well now 50 plus years later Wiz our fin maker and I have modified his template to catch up with modern high-aspect technology, just like what has happened to sailboats. So here is our stretched-out Phil-fin. Number one is huge at 13”, but we’ll reduce the next ones in stages. This beast should turn any nine-foot plus board into a noserider deluxe! Stay tuned!

Randy Rarick

Monday, February 27, 2012
On Friday the great Randy Rarick came by to catch up. Dick Hoole was his stooge for the day - Here are the three wise monkeys outside our factory. Randy and I go way back to 1967 when he drove me to Honolulu airport to collect my notorious Plastic Machine. Weve spent many a day in shaping rooms together since then and all of it has been simply great! Randy is one cool dude!

Wategos cruiser

Friday, February 17, 2012

For ages i've been thinking of getting Bob to shape me a big 10 footer to ride at Wategos when the swell is fat and slow. I went through the existing range, but still wanted something different - classic but not heavy, and not too flat, but still chunky enough to glide through flat sections. I remembered some of the Hawaiian 'beach-boy' style 10 footers I used to see guys riding back in the early 90's at Wategos when I was a grom, and thought something like that would be ideal. So I called up long-time Byron local Max Pendergast and went around to grab his old 10'0" T&C from 1992 (Big Yella he called it!). At 10'0" x 23 1/2" x 3 1/2" it certainly was big, but it was exactly what I was looking for - light enough to throw around off the tail, tons of nose rocker, and a big Vee running nose to tail. It was classic early 90's design, before double concaves, 3-stage rockers and multiple fins made their way into longboards - very simple, but perfect for the waves I was planning to ride. I bought it out and gave it to Bob, and he whipped one up in a couple of hours - sticking with the early 90's theme I even had the guys spray it fluro pink - horrible. Anyway, I've had 3 surfs on it and its tons of fun - paddles well, and is super easy to turn off the tail with that big flat panel Vee, and a deep 11" fin. I think we'll be making a few of these for Wategos, but no more fluro pink I promise. Thanks to Max and Yvonne for lending me Big Yella!
